Controversial Adam Sandler Movie, Ridiculous 6, Releases Today Exclusively On Netflix

Adam Sandler’s new movie, Ridiculous 6, releases exclusively on Netflix today, Friday December 11th. The comedy follows Sandler as an outlaw raised by American Indians who along with five half-brothers search for their kidnapped father.

This past summer, an uproar over the treatment of women and American Indian symbols in Adam Sandler’s new movie made headlines across the country. Many Native actors walked off the set because of what they saw as degrading humor and innaccurate representations: citing incidents of derogatory names for Indian women; improper use of eagle feathers; along with misrepresenting the tribe they were to be portraying by having them wear regalia that is not representative of that tribe.

Despite many Indian actors walking off of the set and taking to social media and blogs to tell their story, many other Indian actors stayed. Saginaw Grant, a well-known actor and member of the Sac-n-Fox, Iowa, and Otoe-Missouria Nations, and other actors from various tribes defended the movie, why they stayed, and their part in it.

In response to the controversy, Netflix ordered several scenes with Native actors to be cut. A move that some question will harm the Indian actors more than help.

There will be many Indians who don’t watch this movie and protest its release. There will also be many Indians who watch the movie. Are you going to watch the movie, or did you? What do you think about Sandler’s attempt to include American Indians in one of his comedies?
